EdYou

Program: South Africa Summer 2014

Pitch

Fact: only 15% of tertiary students graduate in the field of study they started in.
Fact: having work experience makes you more employable
Fact: In a study in the UK young adults who got business experience while at school went on to earn 20% more than pupils without work experience.

Hi, my name is Kristen, and together with two colleagues of mine we bring you our company EdYou.

EdYou will connect school pupils with companies in industries they are interested in pursuing as a career. We will facilitate this relationship by making use of an online platform. Pupils who upload their profiles to this platform will be matched with companies they are suited to. They will then have the opportunity to spend a specified time period with this company. A customized educational tool kit will need to be completed by the pupil to ensure they are learning about the industry. This will also gain credibility with the pupils' parents and potential future employers.

How this will benefit pupils:

Pupils will have access to companies they are interested in working for in the near future
Pupils will learn through experience how specific companies and the industry that they are in function
Pupils will be more aware of what degree they should study to achieve their goals and if they as individuals are suited to this
It is an opportunity to network with possible future employers and to become more employable themselves

How this will benefit companies:

We give companies access to pupils who are personally interested in them and their industry
It is an opportunity to network with possible future human capital
It is great for their corporate image and will contribute to their CSIR
It is creating awareness with the next generation

We will initially be targeting Private Schools and well known companies involved in CSIR, with smaller companies that are not as mainstream and are less popular as career choices. At this stage we have found too much red tape involved with the companies and trying to get a them to part with their CSIR budget. We have decided the pupils have more to gain right now and have targeted them as our paying customers.

Our minimum viable product that we are aiming for by Demo day will be a basic online platform where you can view the relationship between the pupils and the Companies, and the flow and usability of the site. Extensions to this site will be on the front-end, but not functioning on our back-end as yet. We will have 2 schools and 2 businesses on board with us. While I have absolute faith in my team, we are lacking in specific programming skills and might have to outsource this if necessary.

As South Africans we are acutely aware of the state of our education system, unemployment and the large degree of inequality. We at EdYou are providing a unique service that will help transform our nation and secure our future. We will strive to encourage pupils and companies alike to embrace this service!

Description

EdYou is a company that encourages high school pupils to take their future into their own hands.

We help pupils connect to a diverse range of companies that they are considering working for in the near future. We make use of an online platform to help facilitate this relationship. In successfully placing pupils with a company in the field of study of their choice, pupils will gain a better insight into that industry, the daily functioning of the business, and if they personally would be suited to this industry for when they join the ranks of the working class.

An educational tool kit will need to be completed to ensure that the pupils learn through experience. This will make the programme more credible to the parents of the pupils and to potential future employers.

Companies who are willing to participate in this programme will gain exposure to the next generation and this will contribute to their CSI ratings. This could also help decrease staff turn over in the future and ensure a more content and satisfied employee base.

As South Africans we are acutely aware of the state of our education system, unemployment and the large degree of inequality. We at EdYou are providing a unique service that will help transform our nation and secure our future - One pupil at a time, one company at a time.
