Shahani Markus Weerawarana has more than 20 years of global experience in the IT industry, government and academia. Her professional career has spanned many different roles, including being an educator, engineer, entrepreneur, manager and researcher.
She is currently a Visiting/Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Sciences & Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. Previously, she was the Chief Technology Officer at the ICT Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka. Prior to that, she was the Head of Engineering at Virtusa (Sri Lanka), which is a global software services provider with centers in USA, UK, India and Sri Lanka. She also worked at Prescient Markets Inc., (New York), and at IBM TJ Watson Research Center (New York).
Shahani has a B.S. in Computer Science & Mathematics, an M.S. in Computer Science, an M.S. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Purdue University, USA. Her research interests include software architecture, software engineering, social informatics, parallel & distributed systems, e-governance and the open source software eco-system.
